Everyday Gratefulness

“One of the ways I have learned to really use ” gratitude” in my life was to start a gratitude journal. At night before I go to bed I write five things I am thankful for. It could be things I am thankful for that I have experienced in that day, like a great cup of coffee or a wonderful talk with a friend. Or it could be something I am just thankful for in general, like my house, my health, my family. I also write one thing I am thankful for about myself, for example, ” I am thankful for my legs that helped me walk today” or maybe something simple like, ” I am thankful for my smile today”. The last thing I write in my journal is the happiest moment of my day. By writing down what I am thankful for each night I realize how rich my life is. Even if I am worried about something, when I look at my ” thankful” list my worries seem to fade. By ending my journal with ” The Happiest Moment” of my day it helps me to really focus in on what is bringing me happiness in each day so I can create more of those moments in my life. I have been doing this practice for about three years now and it’s true… gratitude can change your life!”

Dan Heath and Chip Heath, authors of Made to Stick: Why Some Ideas Survive and Others Die , wrote a wonderful article in “Fast Company” about the power of gratitude in business - and why it is so hard to express it!

Companies with web sites (are there any without?) are easy to reach via the web, take the time and write why that foot massager makes your day or how the sesame seeds on your favorite crackers just moved them to the top of your list! Read the full article here.
The more companies hear from satisfied consumers, the more they may pave the way to channel these utmost important messages to the right places: to the people who need and deserve to hear the praise, as well as to the product designers who are in the powerful position to give us more of what we already love!

In my research on potty training for our potty training course, I have learned that children respond to the emotions of their parents and care takers. In further research, I have learned that in all relationships, the most important step you can take in creating a successful relationship is to be happy yourself.
All people are attracted to happiness. This trait is most easily observed in children who have not yet learned to suppress their emotions. (more…)

Loving your body and giving thanks for the flab, the parts that don’t work very well and all the parts that work beautifully will change your life. Bring gratitude to the kidney stones, arthritis, and the back pain. It certainly cannot hurt and perhaps it will transform. This practice is not a replacement for seeing your doctor.
Gratitude can bring ease to your body. Flabby sagging breasts will not be perky again, but you will feel better about your body with gratitude for the sagging flesh. A deep inner contentment and satisfaction can replace the self-judgments, (more…)

Gratitude equals happiness. Can you imagine being totally happy without feeling totally grateful for the joy you feel? Can you imagine feeling totally grateful without a heart overflowing with joy? Of course not; because gratitude and joy go together.
Unfortunately, we usually count on conditions going a certain way to “make” us feel grateful because we observe gratitude following what we want. We feel grateful when we get the job, win the promotion, make the sale, fit into smaller waist-size. We feel grateful when the doctor tells us that our sick child is not suffering with anything serious. We rarely thing of gratitude as a force that can draw what we want to us.
The problem with this conditional approach to gratitude is that it costs far more than it gains. It costs us happiness. It also costs our children happiness, because children become like those they spend time with. (more…)
